Removal of Large Moles

If you would like to remove a large mole, a surgical mole removal option may be considered in the place of laser mole removal, cryosurgery, or home mole removal. This is because, the other methods are pretty ineffective in removing large moles.

During the mole removal surgery of a large mole (i.e a birth mark), a cutting mole surgical method is used, which may result in a large wound. This wound can be closed by putting very fine stitches through the skin. After the stitches are removed, a thin scratch like linear scar would be left behind.

If the birth mark is too big to be removed at one go, a dermatologist may remove it in stages. In the first surgery, a majority of the mole lesion would be removed and the skin would be sutured. Within 3 to 6 months, the surrounding skin would stretch, expand and relax. After which, the remaining birth mark and the scar of first surgery are both removed together. The skin is again sutured with fine sutures and the end result would be a single thin linear scar.

If the mole or birth mark is too big, you may require skin grafting after the removal of the large mole. The affected area would be covered with a thin layer of skin from the thigh or arm to encourage the growth of new skin over the area.
